Somerset

Somerset is located south of Fish Creek Provincial Park, and southwest of Shawnessy. Somerset is nestled between 6 Street and James McKevitt Road and between 162nd Avenue to the north and Marquis of Lorne Trail (Highway 22X) to the south.

Schools

Somerset Elementary School is located in the southwest community of Somerset, and serves K-4 for the community of Somerset (including Somerside). Students move to Ethel M. Johnson for grades 5 and 6 and then to Harold Panabaker Junior High. Centennial High School in Sundance is the designated high school for Somerset. Separate board elementary and Junior High students are designated for Msgr. J.J. O’Brien in Bridlewood, however, this school is capped so the students will attend Father Doucet Elementary in Shawnessy and St. Bonaventure Junior High School in Lake Bonavista. Senior High students attend Bishop O’Byrne High in Shawnessy.

Shopping

Shopping for the area is west off Macleod Trail in Shawnessy Towne Centre, complete with a Safeway, Superstore, Co-op, Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, Zellers, Staples, Home Depot, Chapters and a new "Coliseum style" movie multiplex. There are many restraurants in the shopping area. A public library is also conveniently located in the area. The largest area shopping centre is Southcentre Mall.

Recreation

A six-acre public square at one of the two entrances into Somerset is designed like an English country garden with extensive landscaping. It includes decorating accents like archways, picnic areas, pathways, a pair of tennis courts, volleyball and basketball courts, a gazebo, and a water park. The residents' association maintains the park well above city standards, for an annual levy of $70.

Soccer fields and ball diamonds are available in the community. There is a YWCA located in Shawnessy Towne Centre offering a pool, climbing wall and exercise equipment. Connected the the YMCA is South Fish Creek Centre with a twin arena and may City of Calgary Recreational Programs.

There is wetland maintained by Ducks Unlimited on the northwest corner of 14th Street and Highway 22x, complete with viewing stations (no boating allowed). Somerset is 1 kilometre north of the world-famous Spruce Meadows equestrian facility (on James McKevittt Road).

Transportation

The residents of Somerset are well served with a C-Train station. Connector buses run through Somerset and along 162 Ave making an easy commute. The C-Train runs to downtown, SAIT, the University of Calgary, the Stampede Grounds, the Saddledome and McMahon Stadium.

Health Services

There are several walk-in clinics in the near vicinity and recently South Calgary Health Centre located at 31 Sunpark Plaza SE in Sundance (just east of Macleod Trail) opened it’s doors. The Centre provides emergency services to local residents.
The area also enjoys the services of several dentists and an orthodontist.
